Verbal Bullying
Verbal bullying is one of the most common forms of bullying faced by students in the Primary division. This topic can be branched out into the following: who is involved in bullying, what is a bystander, what is the difference between telling and tattle telling, and solutions to bullying. Below you will find various questions that are great for classroom discussion, a few activities that educate students about verbal bullying, and some children’s literature that deal with the purposed topic. A sample lesson is provided for the Primary division, however it can be modified and used in the Junior/ Intermediate grades. This page also contains a section for resources that includes various lesson plans, and activities dealing with verbal bullying.

- Have you ever said mean things to someone? How do you think that person felt? How did you feel?

- What are the feelings of the bully?
- What are the feelings of the target?
- What is a bystander?
- What is tattle telling?
- What is the difference between telling and tattle telling?
- How can we be kind with our words?
- If you hear someone say mean things, what would you do? How would you handle the situation?

This book presents various examples of verbal abuse that children might
encounter on a daily basis and it helps kids thinks before they decide to
make fun of someone who is different.
“Simon’s Hook; A Story About Teases and Put-Downs”

This children’s read is a great picture book that tells a story of a boy named
Simon, who is constantly teased. He comes to a point where he does not know
what to do. He ends up consulting his grandmother, who helps him learn an
important lesson on how to handle teasing and put- downs.
“Trouble Talk”

Trouble Talk is a children’s book about a girl named Bailey who loves to
gossip, spread rumours, and talk about others behind their backs. This book is a
great way to show children that spreading rumours and gossiping is a form of verbal
bullying.
“Say Something”

This book is a great way to show students that being a “silent” bystander is not
the solution to resolve bullying. The girl in the story sees verbal and physical
bullying happening at her school and decides to keep this to herself until
something happens that makes her realize that being a silent bystander is not the
solution.

This sample lesson plan on verbal abuse is intended for use by primary teachers, but it can easily be modified to fit any grade level.
